| Diving in the
Cantabrian Sea brings you close to the pure adventure of the sea,
like the sailor Juan Sebastián Elkano, the most illustrious
native of the Town of Getaria, who in 1522 was the first person to
sail round the world with the Nao Victoria. Nevertheless, Getaria's
sea-orientated vocation comes from the whale fishing that was dominant
during the 14th and 15th centuries, as shown on its coat of arms.
It also suffered the consequences of being the best refuge port in
the border area with France, which made it a protagonist in the naval
disputes for the control of the Gulf of Biscay.
Great naval battles were held in Getaria, but today it is known
as one of the favourite places for lovers of good food and as the
birthplace of the illustrious fashion designer Balenciaga.
However, its most important industries are fishing, the production
of the famous white wine called Txakoli, an excellent accompaniment
for seafood and the delicious fresh fish dishes that are served
in the port restaurants, and tourism, which enjoys the peace and
tranquillity of the area, the unique landscape, the two beaches
and, also, the very interesting sea bed.
This small town of 3,000 inhabitants has a diving centre that specialises
in Mediterranean-style diving with services and comforts that are
not found in the Cantabrian Sea.
KSUB is a five-star PADI centre and
it has 15 different diving points. The furthest point is only 300
m from San Sebastián and can be accessed by sea in less than
20 minutes in a semi-rigid boat. The nearest point is only 2 minutes
away: "The Mouse of Getaria", which gets it name from its
unusual shape which is very like a giant mouse with its tail resting
on the shore.
The Mouse and its surrounding provide a good refuge when the sea
is rough and it has abundant fauna: bogues and horse-mackerels move
in large shoals; we can see conger eels, lobster, spider crabs,
octopus, breams, sea bass, flatfish; there is also a great variety
of nudibranches and anemones, sea fingers, different types of sea
whips and, from the month of June until the end of August, a great
quantity of moon fish and more sporadically dolphins can be observed.
In this area of the Cantabrian Sea there are dives for all levels.
The most experienced divers have steep walls that descend from 20
m to 34 m, sculpted by the action of the sea with thousands of cracks
and hollows where different species seek refuge. The walls are lined
with a great variety of sponges which make it a privileged place
for initiated divers and underwater photographers, who will find
underwater environments which, due to their architectural beauty
and their depth (a minimum 9 m below sea level and a maximum 18
m), deserve a place in specialised magazines. The temperature of
the water oscillates between 11º in winter and 22º in
summer.
Another undoubted attraction is night diving. In KSUB you will
find the convenience and quality of service required by the most
demanding divers, due to the clear desire to offer diving made by
divers for divers, making all our customers feel right at home.
